Chicken curry pie

Vorig weekend heb ik de lekkerste hartige taart gemaakt die ik in tijden heb gehad. We hadden een nieuwjaarsborrel met een aantal buren uit onze straat en ieder stel zou een hapje mee nemen. Ik ben gek op het maken van quiche maar wilde eens iets anders. Ik heb vroeger vaak currypuffs gegeten op feestjes bij een vriendin van mij en met die smaken ben ik een hartige taart gaan bedenken. Op Instagram waren al een paar foto's te bewonderen maar hier dan het recept.

Het was een geslaagd recept en er was gelukkig nog wat over voor de volgende dag, heerlijk een lunch van kliekjes van de vorige dag. Ik moet bekennen dat het wel wat tijd in beslag neemt om deze hartige kip kerrie taart te bereiden maar het is de moeite waard.

Het recept is in het Engels voor mijn internationale volgers, kom je er niet uit dan stuur ik het met liefde toe in het Nederlands.

Last weekend I made the best pie I 've ever had in years.  We were having drinks with a couple of neighbours from our block and every couple was making another dish. I love making quiche but do it so often that I decided to make another dish. It was an experiment but turned out pretty good so that's why I had to share this recipe with you.

It takes a while to prepare but the smell that comes out of your kitchen is worth salivating and you guests will be very happy that you prepared this lovely dish for them.

How to prepare:

Peel, chop the onions, garlic and ginger in smal pieces and fry in a large wok or fryingpan.

Wash the patatoes and chop them in small dices. When the onion mixture is fried and smells good add 250ml of chicken stock, 4 table spoons of korma curry paste and 1,5 table spoon of curry madras powder. Let is simmer with the patatoes for 20 minutes on low heat with lit on the pan.

Line the bottom of your cake tin (I used a round 24cm wide) with bakingpaper and rub the side with a small layer of butter to prevent sticking.

Cover the bottom and sides with puffpastry.

When the patatoes are cooked let all the liquid reduce, mix the cornstarch with 2 tablespoons of water and add to mixture. Stirr untill the sause thickens. Add the chicken mince and stirr though the mixture (does not have to be cooked, otherwise it will be very dry after baking in the oven). Then add 200 grams of green peas and mix it all together

Poor the currymix into the cake tin and cover the pie with the rest of the puffpastry. I left a circle open in the middle to let the moist out. If you want a pretty brown crust brush it with some egg.

Bake in a preheated oven on 210 degrees celcius for 30 minutes.

New year new greens...

Het nieuwe jaar is echt begonnen, de kerstboom is er uit en dan is het ineens leeg in huis.
Het was zo gezellig met alle kerstversiering. Maar niet gevreesd, als de kerstboom er uit gaat, komt de kamerplant er in. En dat heb ik gedaan.

Ik vind het heerlijk al dat groen in huis, het kan mij niet snel genoeg voorjaar worden. Maar aangezien we daar nog een paar maanden op moeten wachten geniet ik alvast van m'n Pikaplant, cacteeën, en andere beauty's.

De Pikaplant is erg leuk, hij zit in een prachtige grote weckpot en leeft op z'n eigen voedingsstoffen en water dat in de pot gerecycled word. En natuurlijk heeft hij ook zonlicht nodig maar dat is in ons lichte huis geen probleem. Een mini milieu in een glazen pot. Je hoeft er helemaal niks aan te doen en er alleen maar van te genieten.

A new year has started, all the christmas decorations are packed and back on the attic again. The house is a bit empty now. But what we do in The Netherlands is replace the christmas tree with some nice indoor greens. And thats what I did too.

I love the new greens in our home, makes me feel a bit like spring is coming already. But I have to be patient and will enjoy my greens at home while we wait for spring and the wind is blowing and rain is falling down from the sky. I have a Pikaplant, succulents, cacti and other beauties. And they are pretty amazing hanging and standing all over our lovely home.

The pikaplant is a special one. It has it's own little environment in a jar and it demands no maintenance at all! The Pikaplant lives of the water, and nutrients that are recycled in the jar. And of course sunlicht. You don't have to do anything, just enjoy it.

Dokter and Misses Joburg

In mijn vorige post heb ik het gehad over mooie ontwerpen uit Zuid-Afrika in Kaapstad. Kaapstad is niet de enige plek in Zuid-Afrika waar je goed design kan vinden. In Johannesburg (Joburg voor de locals) en zeker in de wijk Braamfontein tref je een aantal fantastische winkels met meubels, accessoires maar ook veel food, daar zal ik later meer over vertellen. In Braamfontein zit de showroom van het gelweldige merk Dokter and Misses.

Dokter and Misses is in 2007 opgericht door het designers echtpaar Adriaan Hugo and Katy Taplin. Ze verkopen hun eigen ontwerpen maar ook van andere Zuid-Afrikaanse designers. De collectie is groot en bestaat onder andere uit lampen, tafels en spiegels. Waar ze nog een aantal prachtige producten hebben toegevoegd.

Als je de showroom rond kijkt zie je moderne strakke lijnen met krachtige kleuren en grafische figuren en patronen. Een combinatie van kille en warme materialen komt in veel producten terug. Er zit humor in de ontwerpen en die combinatie spreekt mij altijd erg aan.

De verlichting die ze verkopen is echt geweldig! Het is dan ook moeilijk om te kiezen maar ik heb een aantal toppers geselecteerd. De Sad muur lamp, strak gepoedercoat metaal (mat zwart) met een fragiel kapje van porselein.

Een andere favoriet is de Skew lamp, een voet van (dusty pink) gepoedercoat staal met een rechte eiken steel, daarop een scheef kapje van handgeweven katoen draden. Echt een beauty door de vrouwelijkheid.

De concrete lamp heeft een stevige kokervormige voet van beton met een fragiele gebogen buis en kap die gemaakt zijn van gepoedercoat staal. De vorm doet me denken aan industriële  straatlantaarns. Mooi in zijn eenvoud en combinatie van strakke en robuuste materialen.

De Kreepplanter is van een andere ontwerper; Joe Paine. En heeft strakke lijnen maar door de verschillende armen die langs de as verstelbaar zijn, te vullen met planten worden ze vriendelijk. De armen hebben ringen in verschillende maten waar ook diverse maten potjes in kunnen, leuk met een cactus of juist een hangplantje.

Als je in Joburg bent en houd van modern design dan is deze showroom de bezoekje waard;

In my last post I've told you about some great design from South-Africa in Capetown. But Capetown is not the only place you can find great designs. Johannesburg (Joburg for locals) and as specially the neigbourhood Braamfontein is the place to be if you are looking for modern design, art and good food. I will tell you about that some other time. But in Braamfontein I found the Dokter and Misses furniture shop

Dokter and Misses is established by designers Adriaan Hugo and Katy Taplin (husband and wife) in 2007. They have products like: tables, lighting, storage sollutions and mirrors their standard collection. Where they added collectable design pieces to.

When you look at the showroom you'll find modern pieces with bold colours, strong lines and graphic shapes and patterns. There are different materials combined in most of the designs

The lamps are also very nice! It is hard to choose from, I love the Sad wall light. Fragile but yet strong, a combination of strong (black) powder coated steel and soft looking ceramic shade.

An other favorite is the Skew lamp, a base of (dusty pink) powder coated steel with oak and a soft shade made from hand woven cotton strings.

The concrete lamp is also very nice, the base of concrete is robust but the fragile top is a good contrast. The fine arched tube and shade are made of powdercoated steel. The shape reminds me of industrial street lanterns. The combination of rough concrete and subtile steel makes this one of my favorites.

I love the pottery by designer Joe Paine. Kreepplanter they are named, a joint in the middle makes the arms able to be placed in different positions. Small and larger rings are made to hang various sizes of pots in. A nice green feature for a modern home.

Ik ben onlangs naar het prachtige Zuid-Afrika geweest, daar ben ik in Kaapstad bij een geweldige winkel terecht gekomen. The Watershed store is een Scandinavisch ogend gebouw met kleine winkeltjes. Echt een must see als je van modern design houd en open staat voor vernieuwende producten.

In deze winkeltjes worden producten verkocht van Afrikaanse ontwerpers die traditioneel zijn maar in een nieuw jasje. En als je mij een beetje kent kan jij je natuurlijk voorstellen hoe enthousiast ik hier van werd.

Het merk waar ik vooral erg over te spreken was is Wowzulu. Wowzulu en overkoepelende organisatie Mahatsara is een organisatie dat fair trade producten verkoopt en werkt met locale ambachtslieden, kunstenaars en ontwerpers. Ze hebben een prachtige collectie interieur en mode accessoires op de markt gebracht.

Mijn grote favoriet waren de kussens. In eerste instantie ben ik echt op de looks gevallen. Grafische patronen in moderne kleur stellingen. De kussens zijn gemaakt van oude meel en maïs zakken die gerecycled worden. De zakken zijn de basis van prachtige borduursels van diverse kleuren wol en langs de randen is een prachtige afwerking met kleine kraaltjes gemaakt. Je kan zien dat het door vakmensen gemaakt is en dat er met liefde aan gewerkt word.

De prijzen waren verbazend laag als je weet dat de dames die deze kussens borduren hier ongeveer 5 dagen over doen.

Ik ben fan! En moest dit merk met jullie delen. Ik hoop dat er spoedig iemand in Nederland is die dit merk wil gaan voeren want het is echt de moeite waard. De Zweden zijn al om, want de kussens zijn bij 'Africa Now' geshowed. En afgelopen Maison et Objet 2014 stonden ze in de Etnic Chic hal.

During my recent visit to sunny South Africa I've been to the The watershed store in Capetown. The place to be for modern design lovers who are always looking for new design. The Watershed store is a giant wooden building (looks like moderns Scandinavian Architecture) with lots of small shops who sell modern African design.

You know my love for modern design so you can imagine how happy I was to be there. One of the pretty brands I found there was Wowzulu. Wowzulu (overarching company Mahatsara) is an organization that works with local crafters, artists and designers with fair trade. They have a lovely collection of Interior decoration and fashion accessories.

My favorite was the pillow collection Made by The forward group. The pillows are made of Mealie/corn bags with wool embroideries on them. There are different kinds of patterns in black and white, bright colours and the most pretty pastels. The rims of the pillow are decorated with a simple bead pattern.

What I love is the modern look, graphic patterns and moderns colourways. And the fact that it all fair trade and made of recycled materials.

lekker Zweeds bij de koffie...

Ik ben weer terug, een heerlijke vakantie hebben we gehad. Prachtige plekken bezocht en veel inspiratie op gedaan op het gebied van interieur en design. Maar we zijn niet in Zweden geweest hoor, het was een stukje verder, Zuid-Afrika.

Ik ben druk bezig met het verwerken van alle inspiratie tot een paar nieuwe blog posts maar ondertussen kan ik het niet laten om dit met jullie te delen.

Ik heb al een keer de heerlijke kanelbullar die ik had gebakken met jullie gedeeld en nu heeft Ikea een mooie aanvulling op hun assortiment.

Het heeft te maken met de Zweedse koffie pauze genaamd 'Fika' Even ontspannen en bijkletsen onder het genot van een zoete lekkernij. Ikea heeft natuurlijk hun Kanelbullar link naar recept cinnamonrolls, daarnaast is nu een kant en klare muffin mix voor de mensen die meer van gemak houden.

Ik houd zelf overigens meer van thee en daar heeft Ikea nu een fantastisch thee servies voor. De limited edition Ryssby bestaande uit theekopjes, een geweldige theepot en een taart plateau. Prachtig spierwit porselein met een subtiele zwart grafische lijnen print.

Ik ben fan!

Time to harvest...

De herfst is weer in het land. Ik vind het altijd erg jammer als de zomer is afgelopen. Vooral nu ik eindelijk lekker in onze tuin aan de slag kan. Zo veel mooie bloemen en planten. Een moestuin, mini maar hij heeft zijn werk goed gedaan. Want nu in de herfst kan ik oogsten. Het is vandaag een mooie dag en aangezien ik alles vrij laat heb gezaaid was het vandaag dan eindelijk zover.

Ik heb een prachtige oogst binnen gehaald al zeg ik het zelf. We kunnen er niet met z'n tienen van eten maar zo als men vroegen al zei " wie het kleine niet eert, is..."

Ik heb inmiddels ook mijn mini kas in de tuin geïnstalleerd dus in het voorjaar kan ik vroeg beginnen met zaaien.

Ik ga zo maar eens wat lekkers bereiden met deze mooie ingrediënten.

Aangezien de herfst dagen niet altijd zo mooi zijn als dat het vandaag is ga ik in huis maar weer eens aan de slag en zal spoedig wat nieuws delen.

English summary:

Autumn has begun, not always my favourite season of the year. But today was a beautiful day with lots of sunshine. A good day to harvest my crops. Since we moved into our new home we have a garden with a tiny veggie garden as well. 

Today I will cook with my home grown veggies. It is not enough to feed the whole family but I can make some lovely dishes with those tasty ingredients. Of course I have tried a few. I have to wait a little longer for some juicy yellow tomatoes but the ones I have tried were very sweet.

Of course the dutch autumns aren't always the best, so I will start on decorating the rest of our home. Hope to show you more inspirational pictures soon.
